Storm Precipitation Analysis System Rainfall Disaggregation for Engineering Analysis, Queensland, Australia

Services:
  • QA/QC of hundreds of hourly and daily rainfall observations
  • Corrected numerous discontinuities and errors in the data
  • Developed gridded daily and hourly rainfall data across the large domain
  • Detailed database with thoughts of observations delivered for engineering application

Project Scope:

AWA was provided hundreds of rainfall observations covers a long period of record.  The data sets were prom previously gridded and corrected sets of data developed in Australia.  These included SILO and BARRA reanalysis data as well as observational data.  The datasets required significant correction and validation.  The results were provided as a grid covering the large domain as hourly disaggregated data.  The AWA GIS tool interface allowed the database to be applied at any location across the entire domain.  This included all road and bridge and other highway infrastructure locations that required detailed analyses.

Use of the SPAS process and AWA’ s unique expertise related to rainfall accumulation patterns and meteorological conditions allowed the large number of observation data sets to be corrected and disaggregated.  This demonstrated the need for our expertise because much of these data have been used previously without correction and this work demonstrated the numerous errors and assumption in the database that would have been applied for engineering and design.
