AWA worked closely with the North Carolina dam safety team and reviewers to develop updated PMP, Annual Exceedance Probabilities (AEP), and climate assessments covering the entire state of North Carolina and surrounding regions. The PMP depths replaced HMR depths that were more than 50 years old and included several new storms such as Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Helene. The AEP information provides probability estimates for the entire region that extend to PMP for the 6- and 24-hour durations, while the climate assessments evaluated projections of temperature and precipitation in relation to PMP and other precipitation frequencies. The study results and interactive tools can be found here, https://www.deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/energy-mineral-and-land-resources/dam-safety-program-overview/probable-maximum-precipitation-study.
